Taqwa : Its Benefits in this Dunya and Akhira (2)

"On his first mission into space, an astronaut was teamed up with an orangutan. They were each given an envelope with instructions to be followed once they got into space.
Soon after liftoff, the orangutan tore open his envelope, read the message, and began hitting buttons and flicking switches, and even started jumping up and down. The astronaut was surprised, he tried to remind the orangutan, but instead of obeying, he said, 'Who do you think you are? We can't divulge each other's secrets, right?'
Therefore, the astronaut was eager to read his message, so he ripped his envelope open. On the paper were three words, 'Feed the orangutan.'"

The Moon moved on, "Here, according to Shaikh Uthaymin, are some obvious benefits, which are the results of fearing Allah, in this world.

First, verily, taqwa causes the general affairs of mankind, to become easy.
Allah says,
'... And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease.' [QS. At-Talaq (65):4]
Allah also says,
'As for he who gives and fears Allah. And believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease.' [QS. Al-Layl (92):5-7]
Second, taqwa protects mankind from the harm of shaytan.
Allah says,
'Indeed, those who fear Allāh - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight.' [QS. Al-A’raf (7):201]

Third, indeed taqwa also the cause for opening up the blessings from the heaven and the earth for them.
Allah says,
'Had the people of those societies been faithful and mindful ˹of Allah˺, We would have overwhelmed them with blessings from heaven and earth ....' [QS. Al-A’raf (7):96]
Fourth, taqwa, causes the servant of Allah to be successful in distinguishing the truth from the falsehood, and to have knowledge of each one of them.
Allah says,
'O you who have believed, if you fear Allāh, He will grant you a Furqan (a criterion by which to judge between truth and falsehood. Also interpreted as a 'way out' of difficulties) ....' [QS. Al-Anfal (8):29]
Fifth, if a believer is in difficulty, indeed having taqwa, enables him to come out of it, and to attain provisions and ease from Allah, the likes of which he could never imagine.
Allah says,
'... And whoever fears Allāh - He will make for him a way out [i.e., relief from distress], and provide for them from sources they could never imagine ....'
[QS. at-Talaq (65):2-3]
Sixth, indeed taqwa is deen. For verily, the guardians of Allah’s deen (religion) are the ones who fear Him.
'... Its [true] guardians are not but the Muttaqun [literally: 'those who have taqwa' i.e. who have piety, righteousness, fear and love of Allah, and who take great care to avoid His displeasure.] ....' [QS. al-Anfal (8):34.]
Seventh, taqwa causes a believer not to be frightened by any harm caused by the disbelievers or by their plots.
Allah says,
'... And if you are patient and fear Allāh, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allāh is encompassing of what they do.' [QS. Ali-'Imran (3):120]
Eigth, it is also the reason, for which Allah sends help from the heavens at the time of adversity, and meeting the enemies of Allah.
Allah says,
'And already had Allāh given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were weak [i.e., few in number]. Then fear Allāh; perhaps you will be grateful. [Remember] when you said to the believers, 'Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down? Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allāh and they [i.e., the enemy] come upon you [attacking] in rage, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks [of distinction].' And Allāh made it not except as [a sign of] good tidings for you and to reassure your hearts thereby. And victory is not except from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.' [QS. Ali-'Imran (3):123-126]
Ninth, Taqwa causes a lack of enmity or grievance between the servants of Allah.
Allah says,
'... And cooperate in al-birr and at-taqwa, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.' [QS. Al-Ma'idah (5):2]
Birr is the excellence, virtue and goodness present in something. This follows from the root and the derivation of this word in Arabic. Related to it, is burr (wheat), which surpasses other grains in benefits and goodness. Also, a good man is described as barr (fulfilling his promise). Allah described the angels as Bararah (pious and just) and the dwellers of Paradise as abrar (righteous). Birr, then comprises of all kinds of good and perfection expected in a human being. Opposite to it, is ithm (sinning. An-Nuwas bin Si'man, radiyAllahu 'anhu, reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said,
‘Birr is good manners, and ithm is those (evil) thoughts that weave about in your chest and you fear that other people may know about them.’ [Reported by Muslim]
Taqwa, on the other hand, is the means and way leading to birr. The root of the word in Arabic means protection. One practising it protects himself from the fire. Thus the relationship of birr and taqwa is similar to that of health (which is a purpose) and care for the body (which is a means).

Tenth, indeed Taqwa, causes a believer to honour the symbols of Allah (the sacred places).
'That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols [i.e., rites] of Allāh - indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.' [QS. al-Hajj (22):32]
Eleventh, it is also a means by which a believer does good actions, and a cause for them to be accepted by Allah. Likewise it is a forgiveness of sins.
Allah says,
'O you who have believed, fear Allāh and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allāh and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.' [QS. al-Ahzab (33):70-71]
Twelfth, indeed Taqwa causes a believer to lower his voice in front of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) whether that was during his life time or after his death.
'Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allāh - they are the ones whose hearts Allāh has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.' [QS. al-Hujurat (49):3]
The scholars have said: It is disliked to raise ones voice, by the Prophet's grave just as it was disliked to raise ones voice in front of him while he (ﷺ) was alive. So just as he (ﷺ) was respected while he (ﷺ) was alive, he (ﷺ) is to be respected while in his grave.

Thirteenth, indeed Taqwa causes a believer to attain Allah's Love, and this love which Allah bestows upon the believers is for this life and the Hereafter.
Allah says,
'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge) and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him.' [Hadith Qudsi reported by Al-Bukhari]
Fourteenth, Taqwa causes a believer to attain knowledge, and it is the key to knowledge.
Allah says,
'... And fear Allah. And Allah teaches you. And Allah is Knowing of all things.' [QS. Al-Baqarah (2):282]
Fifteenth, Taqwa causes a believer to become strong. A person who has taqwaa will be protected from deviation, and straying from the Right Path, after Allah has bestowed the guidance upon him.
Allah says,
'And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous.' [QS. Al-An'am (6):153]
Sixteenth, indeed Taqwa causes a believer to attain Allah's Mercy and this Mercy is for this life and the Hereafter.
Allah says,
'... And My mercy encompasses all things. So I will decree it [especially] for those who fear Me and give zakāh and those who believe in Our verses.' [QS. Al-An'am (6):153]
Seventeenth, Taqwa causes the believer to attain Allah's company, and this is of two types: The first is general for all of His servants, where Allah accompanies them by His Hearing, Seeing and Knowledge for verily, Allah, the Most High, is the All-Hearer, Seer, and Knower of all His servants condition.
Allah says,
'... and He is with you, wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing.' [QS. Al-Hadid (57):4]
As for the second type, it is a specific type of accompanying which includes Allah's help, support and aid. He, Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says,
'Indeed, Allāh is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.' [QS. An-Nahl (16):128]
Eighteenth, indeed they will have a good outcome on the Day of Judgement due to their taqwa of Allah.
Allah says,
'... and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.' [QS. Taha (20}:132]
Nineteenth, indeed it causes the believer to have glad tidings in this life, either by it being a righteous dream or by the love and praise, which the people have for him.
Allah says,
'Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allāh there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve - Those who believed and were fearing Allah. For them are good tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter. No change is there in the words [i.e., decrees] of Allāh. That is what is the great attainment.' [QS. Yunus (10):62-64]
Twentieth, Taqwa prevents a woman from speaking softly, thus stopping a man who has a sickness in his heart (i.e. an evil desire for adultery).
Allah says,
'O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allāh, then do not be soft in speech [to men],1 lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.' [QS. Al-Ahzab (33):32]
Twenty first, indeed, it prevents injustice in matters of wealth (e.g. a will, testament etc.)
Allah says,
'Prescribed for you when death approaches [any] one of you if he leaves wealth [is that he should make] a bequest for the parents and near relatives according to what is acceptable - a duty upon the righteous [This ruling was abrogated by the revelation in Sūrah an-Nisā’ stipulating obligatory shares for parents and close relatives. Those who do not inherit by law may be remembered in a bequest].' [QS. Al-Baqarah (2):180]
Twenty second, it causes the believer to give the divorced woman her prescribed compensation.
Allah says,
'And for divorced women is a provision according to what is acceptable - a duty upon the righteous.' [QS. Al-Baqarah (2):180]
Twenty third, indeed Taqwa causes a believer not to lose good rewards, which he has gained, for this life or the Hereafter. Allah says - after He had bestowed His blessings upon Yusuf, 'alayhissalaam, by uniting him with his family,
'... then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.' [QS. Yusuf (12):90]
Twenty fourth, indeed it causes a believer to gain guidance.
Allah says,
'Those are upon [right] guidance from their Rabb, and it is those who are the successful.' [QS. Al-Baqarah (2):5]
In the next session, we will look at the benefits of Piety in the Hereafter, Biidznillah."
