Reflection on 8/17

"Indonesian Independence Day celebrated on August 17th, is a profound reflection and celebration of the nation. It marks the day in 1945 when Indonesia declared its independence from Dutch colonial rule and Japanese occupation, a significant milestone achieved through the courage and determination of its freedom fighters.

Indonesian Independence Day is a grand tapestry woven with threads of courage and irony. On August 17th, we celebrate the day when the shackles of colonialism were cast off, only to be replaced by the subtle chains of modernity and bureaucracy.

In the land where freedom was proclaimed with fervent cries, We now navigate traffic jams under smog-filled skies. The heroes of old, with their hearts so bold, would marvel at our new and old struggles.

Reflecting on this day, it’s essential to recognize the immense progress Indonesia has made over the decades. From overcoming colonial oppression to establishing a vibrant democracy, the journey has been filled with challenges and triumphs. The spirit of “Merdeka” (freedom) resonates deeply, symbolizing not just political independence but also the ongoing struggle for social and economic justice.

From the Dutch and Japan, we broke free, long before it was sang by Freddie Merciry, with a grandeur spirit, yet now we wrestle with corruption slay. The dream of 'Merdeka,' so pure and bright, is sometimes observed in the daily fight.

However, as we celebrate, it’s also crucial to consider the areas where the nation continues to strive for true freedom. Issues such as poverty, inequality, and access to education remain pressing concerns. The wise words of Indonesia’s first president, Ir. Sukarno, remind us that the struggle for independence is ongoing: 'My struggle was easier because I fought against foreign invaders, but your struggle will be harder because you fight against your own people'.
In the digital era, this wise saying has been twisted into a meme: 'My struggle was easier because I fought against foreign invaders, but your struggle will be harder because you fight against my children, son-in-law, and brother-in-law.' Who knows to whom this meme is aimed?
Oh, the irony of sustainability, in this Archipelago so vast, where the past’s battles echo, but new challenges are cast. Enlightening the life of the nation is a noble decree, yet many still yearn for the chance to be free.

Indonesian Independence Day is a time to honour the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a future where every citizen can experience the full benefits of freedom and equality. It is a day to come together as a nation, reaffirming the values of unity, diversity, and resilience that make Indonesia unique.

So, let us raise our flags high, in red and white splendour, and toast to a future that we must remember. For independence is more than a date on a page, It’s a continuous journey, stage by stage.
Celebrate with laughter, with satire’s keen eye, for in humour, we find the strength to defy. Indonesia, oh Indonesia, with your spirit so true.
As we gather in the streets, in homes, and hearts, we remember the sacrifices that played their parts. From Sabang to Merauke, the islands unite, in a chorus of freedom, a beautiful sight indeed. The children play games, their laughter so clear, echoing the joy of a nation held dear. Competitions of strength, of wit, and of grace, reflecting the spirit of this diverse place.
In the evening, fireworks light up the sky, A reminder of the dreams that continue to fly. For every spark that ascends, a hope is reborn, In the hearts of Indonesians, from dusk until dawn.

So, let us not forget, as we revel and cheer, the journey of freedom is both far and near. With each passing year, may we strive to achieve, a nation where all can dream and believe.
In the bustling markets and quiet villages, the echoes of history whisper through the ages. From the rice fields to the urban sprawl, The spirit of independence unites us all.
The elders recount tales of struggle and might, of battles fought bravely, of day turning to night. Their stories remind us of the price that was paid, for the freedom we cherish, for the progress we’ve made.

Yet, amidst the celebrations, let us not forget, the promises unfulfilled, the goals unmet. For independence is not just a historical feat, but a living, breathing mission, a challenge to meet.
In the classrooms, the future leaders are taught, With lessons of freedom, with battles hard-fought. Their eyes were filled with dreams, their hearts with desire, to build a nation that will never tire.
The artists and poets, with their brushes and pens, capture the essence of freedom, again and again. Through their works, the spirit of 'Merdeka' shines, in colours and words, in rhythms and lines.

As we stand together, hand in hand. Let us pledge to protect this beloved land. With unity and courage, with wisdom and grace. Let us forge a future that all can embrace.
Indonesia, oh Indonesia, with your spirit so true, may your future be bright, and your skies ever blue. Merdeka!
And Allah knows best."
